    Overview

The Lemosho Route is a popular and scenic path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is often considered one of the most beautiful routes, offering diverse landscapes and excellent acclimatization opportunities. The Lemosho Route is known for its relatively low traffic, providing climbers with a sense of solitude and a more remote experience compared to some other routes.

The journey typically starts at the Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. The route takes climbers through lush rainforests, where they may encounter a variety of plant and animal life, including colobus monkeys. As trekkers ascend, the trail transitions through heath and moorland, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Shira Plateau and the surrounding landscapes.

One of the distinctive features of the Lemosho Route is its high-altitude trekking through the Shira Plateau, providing ample time for acclimatization. The route eventually converges with the Machame Route near Lava Tower, and climbers continue their ascent towards the summit through the Barranco Wall.

The Lemosho Route is generally completed in seven to nine days, allowing for a gradual and more comfortable ascent, which enhances the chances of successful acclimatization and summiting. This route is suitable for trekkers who appreciate scenic landscapes, wildlife, and a less crowded experience. As with any climb on Mount Kilimanjaro, proper preparation, physical fitness, and experienced guides are crucial for a safe and enjoyable ascent via the Lemosho Route.

Day 7: Ascend to the summit (Uhuru Peak) from Barafu Camp, then descend to Mweka Camp

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all they way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
